DFW CHIMNEY GUIDE

How to Prepare for Chimney Service

A practical checklist for a clearer inspection, cleaning or repair conversation.

Gather what you already know.

Write down the fireplace type, make or model if accessible, approximate last service date and any changes you have noticed. Keep previous reports and repair proposals together.

Explain the reason for the visit.

Routine maintenance, a home purchase, water entry and performance concerns may call for different scopes. Describe observations without attempting to diagnose the chimney yourself.

Plan safe access.

Tell the provider about roof height, gates, pets and indoor protection needs. Photos can help organize visible concerns; they do not replace an inspection. Do not climb onto the roof to complete this request.

Compare the written scope.

Ask what is inspected, what is cleaned, how findings are documented and which repairs are separate. Confirm professional credentials, insurance and terms directly.

CSIA recommends annual professional inspections and cleaning as needed. Read the homeowner guidance.
